Elastic deformation associated to a vertical strike-slip
fault
Overview. This is a 3D mechanical experiment showing
how to simulate the deformation of an elastic medium due to the motion on a
rectangular array (see mesh). Lateral
sides and the lower side are constrained to zero. Model parameters are defined in files
iessai
and jessai . The definition of the
motion is defined in the file patch (see
iessai file too).
Results. After the damping of inertial forces (here an
arbitrary time of 100 yrs), the elastic medium accumulates deviatoric stress in
the fault vicinity (figure). A
cross-section perpendicular to the fault plane (made with p2x, iopt=5) shows the
stress spreading away from the fault plane (figure).
At the surface, the displacement, that is 1.25 m on the fault, decreases
progressively to zero (figure).
